THE HISTORY OF STUDIO 58
The year 1965 saw the first Studio 58 classes being held at Vancouver Community College’s King Edward Campus. The theatre department transferred five years later to the Langara Campus, and Studio 58 was officially given its name!
Studio 58 does teach the theatre arts, but it also operates its own theatre. Every year, it performs two indie productions, as well as four full length productions. The performances are all helmed by industry professionals, and the media attends to write formal reviews.
There are two different types of programs students can look forward to: Studio 58’s Production Program, as well as their Acting Program. Both programs are full time, and both take three years to complete.
Potential students can enjoy a studio tour on the Studio 58 website to get a better idea of the facilities and programs.
THE 2022/2023 SEASON AT STUDIO 58
There are five productions being presented by Studio 58 this season:
BLUE STOCKINGS: Blue Stockings follows the story of four women studying at Cambridge University’s Girton, the first college that permitted women, and how they were denied their degrees when they completed their studies. Despite their accomplishments and how educated they are, they are not qualified to work, and society deems them unfit for marriage. This production utilizes keen wit and addresses a stark inequality.
METAMORPHOSES: This production puts a modern spin on a classic. Ovid’s mythological tales and recognizable characters like Orpheus and Euridyce are treated to an epic reimagining. Join the dynamic cast for a thrilling evening you won’t soon forget.
A CHORUS LINE: A fan favourite, A Chorus Line follows Broadway performers on their audition journey, during which they divulge personal stories that reach all the back into their childhoods. They share what they’ve gone through as they navigate their industry and do everything they can to achieve their most treasured goals. This inspiring play is Tony award winning, so don’t miss out!
THE KITCHEN: Though this production has been changed to reflect the current times, The Kitchen was originally inspired by the socialism movement that began after World War 2. It is set in a prestigious restaurant, specifically its kitchen, and follows its staff members through the trials of their work days.
RISKY NIGHTS: The Risky Nights series is an ongoing one, which is currently in its twenty-first year. It is where students’ fourth term classroom lessons and the main stage come together. Utilizing their terms of learning, the students team up with a professional director to create and then act out all parts of a theatre piece–one that’s also original! Please note that Risky Nights does include themes, such as death and sex, which are considered mature.
