Being an actor requires more than just showing up on set and performing. It is important for actors to be aware of the dos and don’ts associated with the acting world if they wish to have a successful career. With that in mind, here are some things actors should avoid doing in order to make sure their career stays on track.

NEVER BE UNAVAILABLE

Actors should always make themselves available for castings, auditions and potential projects. Being unavailable or unable to respond quickly is not a good look for actors in the eyes of casting directors, producers and directors. Make sure that you have a way to be reached at all times and that you are paying attention – don’t miss a call just because your ringer wasn’t turned on!

NEVER TRY AND CALL THE SHOTS ON SET

As an actor, you are there to bring the characters and stories to life. This means that your job is to follow directions from the director or producers and take on board what they require from you. Don’t try and call the shots yourself as this won’t go down well with any of those in charge.

NEVER SHOW UP LATE FOR WORK

Showing up late for work is a huge no-no in the acting world. Not only do you risk being kicked off the set, but it also looks unprofessional and casts doubts on your reliability as an actor. Always plan to be about 15 minutes early (unless you’ve been told differently) so you can prepare yourself for the day ahead.

NEVER BE UNPREPARED

Before any shoot or audition, make sure that you are prepared and know what is expected of you. Reading the script thoroughly, learning all your lines, and knowing how your character behaves will give casting directors and producers confidence in you. Never arrive unprepared or without having done your homework – this could cost you potential roles in the future!

NEVER FORGET TO NETWORK

Networking plays a huge part in the acting world. Make sure you are networking and connecting with casting directors, producers and other actors that could help you further your career. Don’t be afraid to reach out for advice or just to let people know about what projects you are currently working on – it could lead to some great opportunities!

NEVER ARRIVE UNPREPARED TO WORK

Showing up on set without the right equipment or wardrobe can be a huge problem. Always make sure that you have everything that you need before you leave, so you don’t have to worry about forgetting something and delaying work. Have an organized checklist of items that you need to bring with you for different types of shoots, and do a last-minute check before leaving.

NEVER GET TOO COCKY

Having confidence in yourself is an important trait for an actor, but don’t let it get the better of you. Arrogance and cockiness can be off-putting to those working with you and won’t give a good impression to anyone watching or working on set. Remember that even though you are confident, humility goes a long way!

These are just some of the important dos and don’ts when it comes to acting. Taking note of these tips should help actors stay on track and make sure they have all the tools necessary for success in their career.
